The Short Version: http://bbs.tastytronic.net/
We now have a bulletin board / community message board system for
people to enjoy and participate in! Play around with it, and tell your
friends if you think they'd like it.
The Long Version:
You may remember from the Good Ol' Days, back when the redvinegar
mailing list was a discussion list as well as an announcement list. A
lot of people liked it, a lot of people didn't. When we made the new
list, I set it as announcements only, to avoid annoying people. But I
missed the community created by those that wanted to participate more
actively.
Recently, Phil was pining away for the discussion list, and I was
thinking about some kind of community website for friends and fans,
and it occurred to me that there was already a good solution out there
-- a system called "mod virgule" -- so I put it together with the
help of my friend Nick Moffitt, and we present to you, The Tastytronic
Diner:
http://bbs.tastytronic.net/
Go ahead and check it out -- right now it's pretty empty, but soon it
should be bustling with your words and ideas. Basically, here's the
idea:
You create an account and log in. From there, you can write diary
entries (some people keep up with these fairly well), create new Entrees
(since this is a diner), or post replies to them. Please keep the
Entree and Special names oriented towards a Diner theme, and Specials
should really be announcements or major topics -- so unless it's
important, just create a new Entree or post in a preexisting Entree.
Other than that, the idea is that you can post responses to people, or
talk about your day, or start a new Entree about a subject you're
interested in -- it's very open ended, and I hope that it becomes
something you can recommend to your friends as an interesting way to
communicate and interact. I also thought that the different projects
I'm involved in create a curious nexus of different groups of people
and social circles, and that makes the whole experiment even more
interesting.
This bbs utilizes something called a "trust metric" that establishes a
community oriented around certification levels. On the one hand that
seems kind of elitist and lame, but it's actually useful to some
degree to show who's in charge, who's a regular, and who just blew in.
Don't certify people up to "Fixture" just because -- start at
"Regular" and then see if later you think people deserve it -- the
idea is to make the certifications a useful way of knowing how the
community sees people, and who is an active member of that community.
That being said, a regular can do everything a fixture can, so there's
no discrimination there -- only the brand new tourists have to wait to
post.
Please, check it out -- it's easy and very self explanatory -- and I
hope it gets well used. If you have any questions, write to me at
pedro@tastytronic.net.

See you at the diner!
