Have you tried downloading the LILO bootdisk image from
http://my.core.com/~dhorton/linux/pocket/ or one of the rootdisk images?
It might help to narrow down if the problem is coming from the BOOTdisk
or if it is a problem with the ROOTdisk. I get the feeling you had the
same type of problem with both LILO and GRUB. Try different
combinations of the disks you built and the disk images you download.
Hopefully that will help find the source of the error.
